Dutton Memorial, 2006

This bench serves as a memorial for a couple in Nantucket. As art collectors, they wanted something unusual. I carved the curved seat into a boulder of Verde Antique marble, which was quarried in the thirties in Cavendish, VT. I wanted to leave most of the weathered surfaces to contrast with the polished green seat. Names and dates are engraved on the lip of the seat. From the back the piece looks like a natural boulder. It is placed in the oldest cemetery in Nantucket, which also contains the remains of 22 ship captains.

Medium: Marble.

Location: Nantucket, MA
